DELTA UPSILON FRATERNITY

Dikaia Upotheke
Delta Upsilon was founded in 1834 at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts by 30 good men in the Freshman Recitation Room of Old West College, with the vision of forming "the premier men's fraternity committed to Building Better Men for a global society through service, leadership development and lifelong personal growth of our diverse membership." It was the first non-secret fraternity ever and was founded upon four principles:
The Promotion of Friendship
The Development of Character
The Diffusion of Liberal Culture
The Advancement of Justice
The brotherhood spread rapidly in the 1840’s until the first 7 chapters met at the 1852 Convention of the Anti-Secret Confederation. These chapters came to be known as the “Seven Stars” of the anti-secrecy fight, and are represented on the DU coat of arms.
Originally founded as “The Social Fraternity”, the name Delta Upsilon was officially adopted at the Convention of 1858 when the motto was officially changed from Ouden Adelon, meaning “Nothing Secret,” to “Dikaia Upotheke,” which translates to “Justice our Foundation.”
Delta Upsilon currently has 79 chapters and interest groups across the United States and Canada, and is proud to be the world’s only international fraternity committed to sharing its ideas, symbols, and rituals openly. In 2009, DU is celebrating 175 years of Building Better Men and looks forward toward a future of brotherhood founded on principles its members can believe in.
